Cecilia Monroy: Indagaciones

During the summer of 2009, Centro Hemisférico presented “Inquiries,” a photography exhibit by Cecilia Monroy comprised of a series of photographs in which water is a basic element in the construction of the images. As suggested by the exhibition’s title, the artist invited the public to explore sensations produced under water wherein perception changes as it passes from a conscious state to a parallel reality and the liquid connects us to dreams, fears, hopes, and desires. Such a process is akin to returning the the maternal womb, gestating the opportunity to begin again, to be reborn, to breathe. In addition to its aquatic portion, the exhibition also featured a journey through scenes in which an exploration of femininity serves as a visual protagonist and that manifest different transformations of the theme.

The pieces mounted in FOMMA integrated fully into the space, suggesting that the space itself was yet another piece in the exhibition. The exhibition was part of the second week of activities in the TRAGAMELUZ 2009 festival (best known as the “Eighth Chiapanecan Photographic Exhibition”).
