On July 1 and 2, 2009, Jesusa Rodríguez presented “The First Dream of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz,” a theatrical piece based on an autobiographical poem, “First Dream,” written by the Mexican poet, scholar, and nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. The poem itself consists in the following verses: “As it was nighttime, I fell asleep, I dreamed that I wanted to understand instantly all of the things that comprise the universe, I couldn’t, not even by categories or one of the many components. Disillusioned, the sun rose and I woke.” According to Jesusa Rodríguez, “The poem is erudite and, as Amado Nervo points out, slightly ‘cuneiform’ yet splendid. Her understanding requires intensive study and therefore we invite the spectator to not worry about his or her immediate comprehension of the text and therefore to enjoy the rich sound of this lofty ‘First Dream.’ The dramatization of the poem only seeks to share the beauty of this experience and increase awareness of one of the greatest poems by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.”
